The town of St. Elmo is found at the foot of Lookout Mountain and is situated between downtown Chattanooga and the Tennessee/ Georgia state line. One of Chattanooga’s oldest neighborhoods, St. Elmo was founded in 1185 and added to the National Historic Registry in 1992. St. Elmo residents enjoy the proximity to the hiking and biking trails of Lookout Mountain along with the Virginia Avenue Greenway which connects to the Tennessee Riverwalk walking and biking path. Homes in St. Elmo are an eclectic mix of restored Victorian homes from the 1800’s and classic cottages from the 1920’s all the way to new construction homes built within the last few years. In 2021, 98 homes sold in St. Elmo at an average price of $339,554 with an average size of 1600 square feet after spending approximately 14 days on the market. With a median age of 33, St. Elmo has a vibrant younger neighborhood community, with many serving on The Community Association of Historic St. Elmo board. A 35% of residents are married with children under the age of 18 and children attend Calvin Donaldson Elementary, East Lake Academy of Fine Arts and Howard School of Academics and Technology. Chattanooga Christian School is a pre-k- 12th grade private school is also located in the area. St. Elmo is home to five parks, including St. Elmo Park. In 2021, BlueCross spent $750,000 to completely overhaul St. Elmo Park with new playground equipment and swings to include accessible play areas, a fitness station and community lawn.
