What’s Going on This Weekend in Chattanooga

Well, as I look out my office window, I see snow flurries and a lot of traffic. What does that mean? It means school has been canceled, the roads are being salted and if you believe the southern stereotype, grocery stores are quickly running out of bread and milk in preparation for the milk sandwiches that are de rigueur for  a snow day.  On days like this, I like to head to the woods to watch the snow gather. It is incredibly peaceful and the trails are often empty with the exception of fellow dedicated hikers.

If being indoors is more your thing, here are  your best bets for fun this weekend in Chattanooga.

Harry Potter Magical Ball

I was at the midnight release of the last two Harry Potter  books and I can tell you, the nerd fest was awesome. Tonight you can head to Barnes and Noble for a little more of the Potter fun.  Featuring DJ Gene Lovin, games, giveaways and more.  Free to the public. 7 pm. 2100  Hamilton Place Mall

Campfire Breakfast in a Bag

Camping in the winter is the way to go. I love waking up chilly and warming by a campfire, then spending the day moving around in the woods. Cooking is one of the best parts of camping. Saturday, you can learn how to make campfire breakfast in a bag from naturalist Taylor Berry. Feast on bacon and eggs as you learn valuable cooking skills. Spend some time enjoying the beauty of Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center as well.  10-11:30. Free for members $7-10 for everyone else.  RSVP online .

Chattanooga Whiskey

After fighting to get law changed, creating a product that has found a dedicated following, Chattanooga Whiskey is finally ready to be distilled in Chattanooga. Saturday from 2-7 you can tour the distillery before they begin production and close to the public. Featuring live music, tours and specialty cocktails, this event is a once in a lifetime tour of the open facility. Tickets are $10 if you are drinking and free if you are not. 890 Riverfront Parkway. Kids welcome.

The Nutcracker

A Christmas tradition for many families, the Nutcracker is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season. The pageantry, the music and the beautiful dancing makes it one of the all time favorite ballets. The Chattanooga Ballet performs at the Tivoli Theater, creating the perfect stage for the historic show. Saturday 2pm and 7:30pm and Sunday 2pm. Tickets are available. 709 Broad Street.

If you decide to get out and enjoy the snow, hike the Guild-Hardy Trail on Lookout Mountain, easy enough for beginners, but long enough to make it fun.  Stay warm, enjoy your milk sandwich and have a fantastic weekend.
