We are in what some people call the dog days of summer in Chattanooga. I personally like dogs and warm weather, so I say bring it on. This weekend in Chattanooga is slated to have some seasonal thunderstorms so you will want to have some plans that include both indoors and outdoor fun. Here are your best bets.
Songbirds Guitar Museum and Venue
Songbirds is a world class guitar museum in the heart of the southside of Chattanooga that attracts visitors from all over the world. Whether you are a guitar aficionado, musician or casual fan, the museum is an interesting way to spend an afternoon. Recently, Songbirds took over the downstairs music venue and now offers two spaces to hear live music. The museum is also a music venue and regularly hosts intimate singer/songwriter shows while the lower or Songbirds South hosts larger bands. This weekend you can hear bands at Songbirds South all three nights, including a tribute to Tom Petty tonight. Upstairs tomorrow, tour the museum and be treated to a special exhibit and show on Saturday, Six String Queens: A Celebration of Women in Music. Info and tickets can be found online atSongbird.rocksOpen daily at 10 am. 35 Station Street.
Yoga and Mimosas
I like yoga and the flexibility and centered feeling I feel when I finish a session. I love mimosas and the celebratory feeling they give you when you have one. On Saturday, yoga instructor Kat Smith lead a 60 minute a rejuvenating yoga flow. Afterwards, guests are invited to indulge in a bubbly mimosa pick-me-up! Appropriate for all fitness levels, the suggested donation for the event is $10 with all proceeds going to support the Glass House Collective. Bring a yoga mat and water.
The yoga class will be appropriate for all experience levels; Participants are asked to bring their own mat and bottle of water for the session. Suggested donation for participation in Yoga & Mimosas is $10 per person, and proceeds from the event will be made in support of the Glass House Collective. Yoga will be held from 10am-11am at Gallery 1401 1478 Market Street.
I love going to the IMAX. We took our kids when they were little and it was cool to watch them reach for the objects coming at them. The current offerings of surround movies offer something for everyone. America’s Musical Journey, narrated by Morgan Freeman and featuring Aloe Blacc, “celebrates the unique diversity of cultures and creative innovations that characterize America, as told through the story of its music.” The Wild Around You focuses on animals and the creates in and around our neighborhoods. Showtimes are all day long beginning at 11 am with the last show at 8 pm. The shows alternate, so check the website. Tickets are $11.95 for adults and $9.95 for kids. 201 Chestnut Street.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend, enjoying the last month of summer on our city’s lakes, rivers, mountains and greenways. Head to one of the Chattanooga Markets and get your fill of the last of the summer tomatoes or enjoy dinner at one of the local farm to table restaurants in town. Happy Friday!
