5 Things to Do Before Moving Homes

This post was kindly written for us by our friends at Bellhops

Congratulations, you’ve found the perfect home, and you’ve signed on the dotted line. Now all you need to do is figure out how to make your move a success. Let’s face it, moving to a new house isn’t always an easy experience, particularly when you think of all the packing and organizing you need to do. The good news is that you don’t have to resign yourself to a schedule full of stress for the next few months.

Make sure that that you’re properly prepared is a good way to take some of the pressure off your shoulders, so you still have plenty of time to enjoy the experience of moving to Chattanooga. Here are just five things you can do before you move home, to improve your chances of a wonderful relocation.

1.     Prepare for Practical Packing

Packing is probably the most stressful part of moving to a new house, so it’s important to get on top of the process as quickly as you can. Setting yourself a quota of how many boxes you need to fill each day is a good way to get started and avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Additionally, don’t forget how useful it is to label your boxes. While it might feel like you’re wasting more time to begin with, it will make for an easier move when you know where to put your boxes ready to unpack.

2.     Switch your Utilities

While you probably know that you need to deal with things like switching over your gas and electricity before you move into your new home, it’s easy for things like this to fall to the wayside when you’re dealing with piles of bubble wrap and cardboard boxes. Once you know you’ve sold your old home, and you’re ready to start moving everything over to your new one, make sure you’ve got everything set to be up and running on your move-in date.

3.     Look Forward to Life in your New Home

One of the toughest things to deal with when you’re moving somewhere new, is giving up your old life. If you’ve got a family home that’s brimming with memories, it might be hard to let go, so it’s important to prepare yourself for an emotional experience. Creating a list of the attractions you want to see and the things you want to do when you move to Chattanooga can be a great way to get yourself excited about the move, so you feel less sad. It also means that you can start visualizing what life will be like when you move too.

4.     Take the Basics Before the Moving Truck Comes

If your new home is within easy driving distance, consider getting a few friends together to help you take some of your must-have items over to the location before your moving truck arrives. This will be a great way to start on your unpacking before your home becomes a mess of boxes and furniture. Even if you don’t want to start unpacking, you can place boxes in the right rooms to make your life a lot easier. If it helps, write a bunch of things down on a notepad, and organize your tasks into a moving checklist. This will help you to figure out what to do first, and what chores you can leave until later.

5. Say Goodbye!

Finally, when you’re rushing around trying to get ready for your big move, it can be difficult to find a moment to stop and say farewell to the home and the people you’re leaving behind. Even if you’re just moving to a nearby neighborhood, it can be important to get some closure with your move by bidding a fond farewell to the memories you built in your previous house. Slow down for a second and enjoy the next step on your home ownership journey.
